Three tips to picking the right size of Artwork

Having trouble figuring out what size print to get? I hear you. Determining what size art work can be daunting- what if you get the wrong size? What if it is too big, or too small? Let alone, how will I frame it?

Don’t work yourself into a math conundrum, because I have a few tricks for you.

Follow these steps to figure out which size print to get:

Step 1: Figure out where you want to hang your piece- is it behind the couch? Above the bed? Regardless of where, give it a measure and figure out how much space you want to fill.

TIP: Somewhere along the line I started learning about the rule of thirds. Something about things in threes looks better. Want to hang a few pieces together? Three will look amazing. Want art work above your couch? Divide your couch in thirds, and make your artwork two thirds- guaranteed it will look amazing. Measure your space, and figure out what two thirds is- that’s your ideal artwork size.

Step 2: After you use measure your space, and use the rule of thirds to figure out what size you need- tape it out! Get out some masking tape or painters tape and actually tape the shape onto your wall. What shape you ask? Good question, lets go to Step 3.

Step 3: Think about framing. Are you going to frame your piece? Will you get it done professionally, or buy a store made frame? Will it have a mat?

TIP: This part can be overwhelming but let me give you some more help. Professional framing is amazing, but costs more. Store bought frames are more affordable, but the numbers and math throw people off. All of my prints are sized to fit easily into standard frames, and also standard mats, so you can easily pick a print size and find a store bought frame that will fit it perfectly, or search for one with a mat opening of the print size. (If you are local to Orillia, The Shadow Box is amazing for custom framing, you can also get custom frames from Michaels. Premade frames can be found online, I have had success at Ikea, Michaels and Amazon.)

And finally, if math has gotten you down- you can eye ball it! For a small nook- 10x8. Above a bedside table- 20x16. Behind a small couch- 30x24. Above the bed- 40x30. The largest size also comes as a stretched canvas! Then you can skip the framing all together!

Hopefully these ideas help you select the perfect art piece for your space. And you can always reach out if you want assistance!
