Tripping Tales- Lake Wakimika, Obabika Loop

Looking out over Lake Wakimika, after a long night of rain.

The evening before this a huge storm blew through, and in the middle of the night we had to dig a trench around our tent to avoid spending the night in a puddle. I had opened the tent to go outside and our shoes under the fly were literally floating. Ben and I got out and dug the trench, getting totally soaked- one of those storms that is beyond rain gear. The trench saved us and we were able to stay warm and dry thankfully, and ate bagels with cheese for dinner because there no one wanted to stay out and try to light a stove and get a pot going. The kids just read in the tent and were unfazed.

In the morning a big wind came through and blew the rain clouds away, and we hung up all the wet clothes and gear on the trees to dry for a few hours. Then paddled into the wind for the afternoon to get to our next site.

It was pretty great!

Funnily, I painted this painting before seeing the actual place- after researching our canoe trip I saw an image on someone’s blog, and painted from that. When we got there I thought- “Hey… it looks just like my painting!”

This small but mighty painting, 6x6 inches, acrylic on canvas- got the ball rolling on other paintings to come through. Reproductions and some originals are available now, for a limited time. Grab yours here!
